Summer is finally here, the kids are off school for three months, and I will probably go a little insane. As Tavira celebrated Saint John’s day in June, I took a stroll around the town, to admire the beautifully decorated streets, and whilst on my travels, visited a couple of places that I hadn’t seen before, out of curiosity. We feature a fresh summer dish from Museu do Vinho, meet up with Ana, owner and chef, from Ana’s restaurant in Moncarapacho, and find out more about Dr. Ken Hamilton’s Chiropractic procedures. We bring you the usual, helpful gardening advice from Mark O’Shaughnessy, how to keep safe in the sun from Gareth Bullock, Elizabeth’s book review, and all the sporting news from Chris Wright. I hope you find time to visit Tavira this month.
As you will see in the What’s on Guide, there is plenty to see, and do. Have a relaxing, sun soaked July.

Miss Tavira crowned

The Final of Miss Tavira was held at the Meeting room night club in Tavira at the end of last month.

Once again there was a huge turn out, to see Sofia Gracio (second from right) crowned Miss Tavira, with Elena Cazaciuc (far left) 2nd, and Ines Martins (far right), winning both most photogenic and Miss ‘Friendly’. Tito and Claudia (also pictured), owners of the Meeting room, thanked everyone for making it such a fabulous event.

Well, May has been hectic and flown by, with my husbands, sons and my birthday

in succession. We did find time to visit Pego do Inferno, a beautiful waterfall just outside

Tavira. If you’ve not been there yet, June is the perfect time to visit. We took a drive

up to the restaurant Mesa do Cume, in the hills of Alcaria, with breathtaking views and

stunning food. It was a delightful afternoon.

This month we feature a lovely, unusual, gift shop, Casa das Portas in Tavira. Ladies, be

warned, you’ll need hours to browse here. I would like to give Christopher Wright a

special thank you for all his help this month. Relax and enjoy your June edition. I’d love

to hear from you if you find the articles interesting, or even visit some of the places

featured. Oh yes, something big is happening this month, apparently it involves football…

Thankfully, I survived the Easter holidays and normal life has resumed, phew! As recommended by several readers, I spent an afternoon in Santa Luzia, and had a lovely stroll along the tranquil promenade, it certainly lived up to my expectations… beautiful!

I met up with bistro owners John and Emma from Mesa do Chefe, Claudia and Tito from Quinta Velha, Restaurante O Monte, and the Meeting Room, and also sampled some sushi from Mish Mish in Tavira’s Gran Plaza.

This month we have all the usual features, including golf tips from Benamor, all you need to know about avocados, sporting news and more. I hope you enjoy

this May issue, and as usual, I am grateful for all your comments and suggestions, please keep them coming.

The April edition of East Algarve Magazine is almost ready and will be out on the streets next week. Here is a quick preview of the cover and as you can see we will be focussing on Fuseta this week, preventing the dreaded mould in your house (after a long wet winter like we have just had this is proving to be a popular topic). You can also learn how to grow lettuces amongst other things and how could we forget the Miss Tavira competition being held at The Meeting Room? Here’s Katie, the editors, April welcome:

Spring is here at last. I’m looking forward to eating my childrens easter eggs, but not to the fortnight of entertaining them while they’re off school. Lets hope the beautiful weather enables us to get out more.

I have featured Fuseta this month, the only place I find truly relaxing, and somewhere I go to forget all my worries. This unspoilt fishing village holds so much charm and beauty, friendly locals and great food… well worth a visit. Thank you for all your letters, especially about the dreaded mould problem. We’ve printed some of them in this issue, along with another feature offering advice on mould prevention.

Golf pro tips – Practice, Practice, Practice!

Keith Ashdown, Benamor golf’s resident professional in the East Algarve, gives us some tips to make the most of our golf in 2010.

It’s the same with everything, practice! To be a good housewife, to run a flourishing business, to be a first class secretary, the salesman who gets the best results. The successful people may seem to have charming personalities, but thier success goes much deeper that that. They may seem to be incredibly calm and sure of themselves, but that’s all part of their technique. Without this they would get nowhere. The first lesson about aquiring technique, whatever your job in life, is to be sure that you never put the blame on someone or something else for your own shortcomings. Never blame the golf club for your bad shot, or the state of your bodily health for the lack of your brains.

Don’t waste the energy, you need every ounce of it in building up your own technique until you arrive in the enviable position of an occasional bad shot, only emphasising the rest of the game, and all the technique has this in common, whatever the job, whatever the pastime, it’s owner realises the extent of his own limitation.

Sometimes I think I am happier today than I have ever been in my life, because after 45 years of earning my living from golf, I have discovered it is better to trim my ambitions to fit my talents, than to try to force my talents to embrace my ambitions.
